“Current” is a photo installation work which consists of small prints and glasses filled by water. In this work, Saiki explored the history of a street in the city where He lived, Canal Street in New York, and documented there using a traditional film camera by the style of street photography. The street was built along a waterway where there was a current of water in 19th century. Tracing the history of the street and the canal, Saiki walked along the street and took photographs of the current situation at Canal Street, documenting not the historical events but the fluid ephemera, such as a puddle after rain or plants on the street, which would not become a part of the history. In the installation, the photographs were exhibited with glasses filled with water. The water would be evaporated during the exhibition.
This work was originally made as a collaborative work along with a series of drawing by Emi Nishiwaki.
